A research team composed of the University of Michigan and the Argonne University Consortium conducted a proton-neutron experiment before the zero-gradient synchrotron was closed. This is a continuation of the 1977 proton-proton experiment. Because the zero-gradient magnetic field used to accelerate the proton beam helps to keep the protons in a given spin polarity, the 12,000 megawatts have been used for several years.
