Since the early 1950s, countries all over the world have been using the Purex process to treat irradiated nuclear fuel and extract plutonium and unburned uranium-235 from it. Not so long ago, it was widely believed that this process would continue to be used, with some modifications, for fast reactor fuel reprocessing. Recently, with the change of U.S. nuclear policy, a new direction has appeared in the research of the reprocessing process, that is, the so-called "anti-expansion" nuclear fuel cycle and "demilitarization" reprocessing.
